How to water

For the correct irrigation of the aralia it is good to proceed with a certain regularity. It is essential to irrigate the plant every time the soil is dry. Above all, we must irrigate our aralia during the hottest periods from April to September. It is recommended to supply a good dose of water also to the plants that have been planted recently so as to guarantee a healthy development of the roots. It is not necessary to proceed with a new wetting when the soil is still damp to the touch. In this case we would risk only causing a submersion and asphyxiation of the roots and therefore, the consequent root rot, one of the main causes of death of the aralia. As far as irrigation water is concerned, the plant does not have any particular needs.

How to cure it

Aralia is a plant that prefers shady or semi-shaded locations; in general, he does not like direct exposure to the sun, especially during the hottest hours of the day. If the plant is in an environment with rather harsh winter climates (with temperatures below -12 ° C), it is recommended to place the aralia near a wall in such a way that it is sheltered from the coldest winds. In any case, if the plant is damaged by atmospheric agents, it is able to regenerate itself rather quickly in spring. As for the multiplication of the aralia, it is possible to proceed with the seeds. These seeds must be planted in autumn, after depriving them of the pulp they must be placed inside jars to be kept inside greenhouses during the winter. The plants can be planted the following spring.

How to fertilize

Aralia fertilization can take place in two distinct periods. You can choose to fertilize the plant during the growing season or during the flowering period. Normally we proceed using specific liquid fertilizer for green plants that contains equal doses of the fundamental chemical substances such as: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Fertilization must take place about once every 16-20 days and the fertilizer must be diluted with irrigation water. It is recommended to slightly reduce the dose compared to what is indicated on the package. If the aralia is grown outdoors it is possible to use a slow release granular fertilizer that will be covered with a layer of mulch in order to prevent the soil from drying too quickly.

Aralia: Diseases and remedies

Aralia can be affected by different types of parasites. Among these, aphids, or plant lice, could infest the plant easily. If you notice their presence on the leaves it is good to proceed with pesticides. Furthermore, the aralia can be attacked by the cochineal. This parasite manifests itself in the form of light spots on the underside of the leaves. To eradicate the cochineal it is possible to proceed by cleaning the affected parts with alcohol wipes. If the plant is cultivated in a particularly hot and dry environment, it can also be infested with red spider mites that will be eradicated with special insecticides. Furthermore, the aralia can be damaged by atmospheric agents. For example, if the environment is too cold, the plant risks being ruined by winter frosts. It is therefore good to place the plant in a warmer environment during the cold seasons.
